What’s the Difference Between Solar Panels and Solar Roof Tiles?
While solar panels and tiles are both renewable energy sources and sound like the same thing, they do have a few differences you should take note of.
Solar panels are generally compatible with most roof types and are typically installed right on top of the roof. They come in two colors: black and blue.
On the other hand, solar roof tiles work as the actual roof and are installed instead of traditional asphalt shingles. They’re also called building integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) and are thin sheets that can fit onto an existing roof covering.
Both are excellent forms of renewable energy that can help you save money in the long run while also saving the planet.
Advantages of Solar Panels
Solar panels are a renewable energy source that has been around for years, much longer than solar roof tiles. Because of this, more contractors are familiar with the installation process and are more likely to install them over solar tiles.
They are compatible with most roof types and can produce energy effectively. Because they’re installed on top of the roof and aren’t part of it, they’re not a permanent structure and can be uninstalled if necessary. Additionally, they can be angled to get maximum sun exposure to produce maximum energy.
Disadvantages of Solar Panels
Though solar panels have many benefits, they also come with disadvantages. For those conscious about their home’s curb appeal, solar panels only come in black and blue, and sometimes those won’t match the home’s colors.
Installed solar panels have a small gap between the roof and the panel. In this gap, birds can start their nests, and while it may be nice to provide a safe nesting area for birds, it is not encouraged to attract other animals to their eggs, possibly causing damage. Solar roof tiles are a newer form of solar energy and mimic how traditional roof shingles look. They’re integrated right into the roof and come in severely different shades of blue and black, allowing people more options for their home design.

Disadvantages of Solar Roof Tiles
Though solar tiles are a unique way to power your home with renewable energy, they’re also a newer technology. Because of this, there are still many unknowns when using this technology. Be prepared for sticker shock as well. It is not a cheap option, yet we do several each year!
Additionally, they’re not usually compatible with most roof types, and because they’re right on the roof, they can’t be angled to optimize sunlight.
